Understanding Web Directory Submissions

by The Hosting STOP- Copyright © 2006

Improve search engine placement by utilizing online web directories!

One of the simplest ways to improve your sites search engine placement, is by submitting your domain to web directories. There are thousands of directories available all over the Internet. Remember, not all directories are created equal. Our goal is to guide you to a greater understanding of their many differences.

Directory Choices:
The majority of web directories are designed as either a general or niche directory. They are the main types available, and a great place to start!

General Directories
The majority of directories are basic / general. These types offer a broad range of topics, and are not specific to any one field. Most free site submissions are provided by the webmasters of general directories. Not the strongest choice, but worth spending time on.

Niche Directories
Directories that are designed around a specific field or subject. They will only take web sites that are related to the topic at hand. Some may be geared towards finance, Internet, or any category that the owner chooses. Rated higher than most basic directories.

Linking Options:
Both niche and general web directories can be found offering non-reciprocal and/or reciprocal submissions. Understanding the differences is very important.

Non-Reciprocal
Directories that allow you to place your link details on their site without having to add a return (reciprocal) link to them. These are considered one-way links, and are among the best types of links for improving your search engine placement.

Reciprocal
These require you to add a link onto one of your web pages that brings you directly to that specific web directory. Many successful web sites create a links/ resources section on their site, designed specifically for placing reciprocal links to other web domains.

Submission Fee :
The cost of directory submissions will depend squarely on the specific web site in question. Not all site submissions require a fee. Many are offered at no cost.

Free Submissions
Looking for a cost efficient way of getting your web site noticed. Free web directory submissions offer a great way to grow your domain without spending a single dime...the only cost is your time.

Paid Submissions
Paying for site submission on web directories is something that will require more research on your part. Look for directories that have high PR and detailed categories as a general rule to follow. The fee for paid web directory submission is usually a one time charge. Many web directories offer you the option for paid and free listing to choose from. Choosing paid submission gives your site priority over the free site submissions. Like free submission, you can find both non-reciprocal and reciprocal choices for your web site.
